St Francis' Courtyard
On
the right hand side of the church as you enter are doors which
give access to St Francis' Courtyard. The courtyard is designed
as a place of quiet contemplation. The statue was donated by
the Italian community. It has been placed so that St Francis
is looking up at the church. This recalls that at the time of
his conversion, Francis had a vision saying to him "Do you not
see that my house (the church of St Damien in Assisi) is in
ruins. Go and restore it for me". He rebuilt it with his own
bare hands.
The Italian community also decorated the courtyard with plants and flowers and continue to look after them.
