Letter about the High Altar
We have just received the following letter from the Holy Family Church, Addlestone:
Dr Fr Davern
I am writing to thank you for the gift of the High Altar from St Joseph's Church. It has now been successfully installed in the Holy Family Church. It will remain a fitting memorial to Fr Chatterton.
Fr Richard Lear CJ (Fr Chatterton's nephew and former parish priest at Addlestone) will be visiting our Church to bless the altar after the 6.00pm Mass on Saturday 2 December. You will be very welcome to attend, or any of your parishioners.
Yours sincerely in Christ
Rev Adrian Cadwallader CJ
Funds Raised
Good News! Thanks to your generosity, Fr Bill's sponsored walk from Epsom to Arundel has raised an amazing £8323. Story and pictures
And more good news...Our Quiz Night (October 2000) raised £860.58. Thank you to all the organisers and to those who supported it. It was fun evening with the eventual winning team including more than a sprinkling of teachers!
The Knights of St Columba recently (October 2000) donated £400 to our new church fund following a successful car boot sale. Our thanks to them. If anyone has any items suitable for another sale, please contact Bob Hunter via the Priests' House.
The Old Church Lives on...
Not just in our memories, but also in many parts of the Diocese and beyond. The last item to be removed was the altar - given to the Holy Family Church, Addlestone, former parish of Fr Chatterton's nephew, Fr Richard Lear. The benches have gone into storage and will be refurbished for the parish of St Joseph's, Dorking. The stained glass windows, baptismal font and stations of the cross are being prepared for in corporation into our new church, and the organ has found a new home with the monks of Quarr Abbey on the Isle of Wight.
After our final Mass in the church on Tuesday 10 October, we were faced with the daunting task of removing fixtures and fittings by the 16 October. This mammoth task was masterminded by two energetic fellows, Charles and Philippa Dupenois, ably assisted by a whole host of parishioners to whom we all owe a great deal of thanks. Mass is said each day in the hall, and for many it brings back memories of forty years ago when it was used for the same purpose. Many thanks to all who have complimented those who have made our hall a suitable place for the celebration of Mass.
We do need to be sensitive and patient with one another during this transition time. Please pray for the safe completion of our new church and for the wellbeing of the parish
